S.A.F.E. Exercise

With age, there is a tendency for most people to lose their ability to sit or stand up straight in good posture. Through a lifetime of poor sitting posture,  as well as lifting and bending with poor body mechanics, we tend to develop muscle imbalances, and trade the normal curves of our spine for a more flexed posture. This results in increased load forces being exerted on the weakened and porous bones of the vertebra, increasing the risk for fracture. Exercises that increase the load on the spine, therefore, should be avoided for those with known osteoporosis, and should be limited for those with osteopenia.

INSPIRE offers a S.A.F.E. (Skeletally Appropriate For Everybody) comprehensive exercise program, for clients with osteoporosis, osteopenia, and postural problems. The program is also beneficial for those with spinal stenosis, degenerative disc disease, arthritis and chronic fatigue or pain.  Offered as a series of one-on-one sessions or small group classes, the program includes a complete patient assessment, progressive exercise program, postural correction, balance, functional movement training, and body mechanics during activities of daily living. In addition, use of foam rollers for balance and core strengthening, scapular stabilization exercises with resistance bands, information on use of treatment modalities as they pertain to osteoporosis, and guidelines for advanced exercises (e.g., in the gym, Yoga, Pilates, Vibration Platforms, etc.) are addressed as appropriate.

Group participants must be able to safely ascend/descend stairs, and transition from floor <> standing independenlty.  Group Classes are not appropriate for clients with moderate to severe osteoporosis, or those who have, or have had compression fractures.  One-on-one fitness sessions, or physical therapy are available to meet the needs of these individuals.
