Service Description

Dry needling is the use of a fine solid filament needle inserted into a musculoskeletal tissue to restore normal muscle tone, decrease pain, improve sensation, improve circulation, and stimulate tissue healing. Dry needling is one of the most well-supported interventions in physical rehabilitation. In the following slides more than 20 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) (the highest level of evidence) are cited. There are very few modalities in physical rehabilitation that have the benefit of 20+ RCTs. Additionally, there are citations for the 100s of experimental and observational case studies that have also been performed supporting this technique. Randomized controlled trials have demonstrated that dry needling is effective for: Neck pain Shoulder pain Low back pain Pelvic pain and renal cholic Greater trochanteric pain Knee osteoarthritis Patellar pain Hamstring tightness Plantar heel pain Fibromyalgia RCTs are a form of research that is generally used to compare an intervention to sham or other interventions. Additional research also suggests that dry needling is more effective when used to treat trigger points, is likely more effective when used as part of an integrated approach, is more effective when used to address assessed impairments, and has demonstrated both short- and long-term efficacy. In my experience adding dry needling to my practice after 20 years without it, it has been an absolute game changer. I have seen immediate and remarkable changes in difficult to treat conditions including adhesive capsulitis (frozen shoulder), complex regional pain syndrome, and tissue fibrosis, as well as arthritis, tendinopathies, and chronic muscle spasm. I am so impressed with the results that I am willing to offer it as a stand alone treatment, following an initial evaluation, for clients who do not otherwise need skilled physical therapy. $80 for initial 30 minutes, $40 each additional 15 minutes. Includes application of electrical stimulation. Most treatments require 45-60 minutes depending on complexity. Most insurance companies explicitly deny coverage of dry needling, so this is exclusively a cash pay service. Prerequisite physical therapy evaluation should be covered by insurance. Packages available: Ten 30 minute sessions $700, 45 minute sessions $1050 and 60 minute sessions $1400 (a 12.5% savings compared to ala carte sessions.)
